Discussion:
Torrent Features Needed : Downloading Maps & etc ++ PC Version RSS + LibTorrent map caching agent (open source, shared with Map Factor)

==============

Overall, I would prefer the Android versions to all support advertizing so
as to eliminate the Pay vs Free version discontinuity.

You really should have 2 versions for Android. This has to do with Kernel
and Hardware compatibility issues.

The FREE vs PAY versioning is wasteful and unhelpful.

-- With a Username + PWD [or some Google Pay proxy for the same] the ads
can be turned off.

OSMAND should have its own advertising service so as not to depend on
Google or anyone else, self sufficiency is good.

However, using Google Ads as a fallback is OK as a temporary option.

Torrent Features Needed

! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

The ability to download Maps & etc should all be 95% BitTorrent (encrypted
hopefully by defult), 4% HTTPS and 1% HTTP.

Map Factor has a Torrent Download Client built into its MapFactor Navigator
for Android.

The Torrent download feature works wonders and has more or less eliminated
the payment issues around getting OPEN SOURCE MAPS and POI Databases.

=========================================
Long term fixes per Torrent Maps + POI downloads
=========================================

A special PC Version (possibly as a Java application to avoid dependency on
a single CPU) : RSS + LibTorrent map caching agent (open source, shared
with Map Factor) needs to be created with open source RSS + LibTorrent
source code bases. It should support private trackers, so as to allow
verification of Uploads + Download ratios for alternate payment system.

MapFactor and OSMAND should have Torrent Clients in the application that
track Upload and Download ratios, allowing for real time caching when no
navigation is being done.

If you cache several GB in maps or POI databases via BitTorrent ... you
should not have to pay for using a navigation client as you are paying
indirectly via upload bandwidth.

++++

OSMAND needs to set up an online crowdfunding account somewhere, so as to
be able to raise the 50k EUR to 80k EUR needed to help along these changes
by hopefully Summer 2015.

and my preference would be to keep advertising off the systems if nothing
else it is a security risk and how are you going to display the adverts or
give feedback to the advertisers with an off line system, or were you
thinking of burning up people's data bandwidth?

If OsMand had its own internal advertizing system, this would mitigate
these kinds of risks a great deal.

I did point out this possibility in the original text, at least partially.

I am aware of the many COMP.RISKs issues that have appeared from
applications being bound to online advertising systems.

Offline Ads can be stored -- the technology has existed on PC systems for
at least 15 years -- and there are Open Source codebases for this task
somewhere.

The need for a continuous data connection for online ads is not a
requirement!

Just because Google imposes online ads that suck up 2g 3g and 4g traffic
does not mean that that is the only way to do online ads!

Google has to do its online ads that way so the NSA and GCHQ can track
Google's online users. If Google did not do this, it would be fined 250
Thousand SDRs per day!

American Deep State <-- --> Google ... you cannot always tell them apart!

With respect to using a bit torrent to distribute maps, I assume you have

No advertising please. No, no, no, no.
The separation with a paid version versus a free version is really
excellent.
The point of OsmAnd is not to be a system to make money but to make an open
source navigator with a paid app with some extras to be able to pay for
server and hosting costs.
You are really missing the point w.r.t. the philosophy of OsmAnd.
You want advertising and still a paid version (with a password and so on).
That's a far more hideous construction. With a password you need access to
the internet. If you use some key it can be hacked/cracked.
It is open source and you can even build your own full version: just a
simple build option.
Again: You are really missing the point w.r.t. the philosophy of OsmAnd.

And with regard to bittorrents:
I sent this about a month ago to both the mailing list as well as to the
devs. They said they would look into it.

*"MapFactor uses bitlet inside the app to download maps via bittorrent
starting the seed from their own servers (with an "advanced" option, which
means well hidden away, to do a direct download). I know that the btsync
initiative was started some time ago but that is again an "external" app.
With bitlet you can download from inside OsmAnd to a temporary download map
inside the osmand folder "somewhere". You can stop and continue the
download to your liking as it is bittorrent, and once downloaded the map is
moved to the maps folder. The bitlet java library can be found on
https://github.com/bitletorg/bitlet <https://github.com/bitletorg/bitlet>"*

Ads? Please no, non, nee, Нет, Hayır, 无, Nej, Nein, ΔεΜ, níl, khÃŽng có.
Instead of extra activities like advertisements, I would rather see removed
as much features as possible, which need an internet connection.
E.g. the ABS (Android Backup Service) addon could be removed as it can send
all your app settings to the cloud without asking. Ok, this feature can be
disabled under privacy settings, but is ON by default!
