Discussion:
ext sd card question

Just pick up a new tab and a 64gb ext sd card, formatted NTFS. I've looked
around and decided on OsmAnd 2.0.4. (free so far)

I've been reading and finding lots of different info on trying to move the
maps over to the external card but so far having no luck.

Probably some of the post have been dated and not useful anymore.

Being that I have about 5gb of maps and not all that much space on the main
storage
could someone* please supply instructions on the proper procedure for
moving these over to the empty sd card*.

I have both Astro and Total Commander (which I like better) loaded for file
management.

Man, never thought I'd run into a strange problem like this.

Cheers
Fawlty

NTFS as file system is not supported on an android system. You have to
format your SDcard to fat32.

Set up OsmAnd to download to external SD, go into settings>general settings (which in the app will mysteriously change name to global app settings)>data storage folder. Select the option /storage/extSdCard/Android/data/

App will from now on use maps in & download maps to, the external SD card.

To move existing maps to the folder for use by OsmAnd (free) copy them to extSdCard>Android>data>net.osmand>files

Hope this helps.

Hi. Sounds like you just selected the wrong external storage location.
The map folder isn't showing on the external SD because you've not told
OsmAnd the correct location :-) Here's a step by step guide:

1) On a fresh install, on the welcome to OsmAnd screen click the pencil to
edit map storage location. Alternatively you can do this any time in
settings>general settings>data storage folder
2) Select "External storage 2", which once selected, you will see the
storage location becomes */storage/*
*extSdCard/Android/data/net.osmand/files *
2A) For a fresh install you will be asked if you want to copy existing map
files. I have maps for several countries + Wiki + addresses etc etc. With
the amount of maps I have I ignore this as I feel it's easier to connect to
laptop & manually copy them over
*3) *If you want to re-download the base map then region/country maps they
will download to /storage/extSdCard/Android/data/net.osmand/files
4) If you want to move existing map files to external SD or say from your
paid version of OsmAnd+ (I am running OsmAnd+ 1.95 & an OsmAnd free 2.0.xxx
nightly build), you can either move them with a file manager or you might
find it easier to connect to laptop & manually copy/move them over
5) There's no need to create any folders manually, OsmAnd automatically
creates them when you tell it where the map storage location will be. In
this instance just copy the files to */storage/*
*extSdCard/Android/data/net.osmand/files *
6) From memory you may need to exit OsmAnd then restart it for it to
recognise the map files
7) That's it. Good luck :-) Please shout up if you need anything else

Enjoy OsmAnd, it really is fantastic. One of the best apps I've ever
bought. It has a learning curve admittedly, but it's very rewarding once
you get over it

Enjoy OsmAnd, it really is fantastic. One of the best apps I've ever
bought. It has a learning curve admittedly, but it's very flexible &
rewarding once you get over it. I created a gpx file over the weekend,
imported it into OsmAnd & used it to guide us round a walk in the wilds of
the Peak District over the weekend. I've done the same to guide me through
Europe in the summer. It's well worth sticking with :-)

Hi I posted reply but somehow seem to have deleted it whilst trying to edit
the wording! It sounds like you have selected the wrong storage location.
OsmAnd hasn't created the folders on the external SD as you haven't told it
to. Here's a step by step guide:

1) Go into settings> general settings> data storage folder
2) Select "option 2" which you will see the storage location is
*/storage/extSdCard/Android/data/**net.osmand/files *
3) Copy/move your existing map files from current location to the external
SD card (*extSdCard/Android/data/**net.osmand/files) *using a file manager,
or you may prefer to connect to laptop to do it. Just put them in the
"files" folder with anything else OsmAnd has created there
4) From memory, you may need to exit & restart OsmAnd to get it to
recognise the maps (can't remember)
5) That's it. Enjoy OsmAnd :-)

Please shout up if any of that doesn't make sense. OsmAnd can seem a
little daunting but it's very flexible & can really be quite rewarding once
you're used to it. It has a learning curve for sure but it's worthwhile
sticking with. At the weekend I created a .gpx file which I imported to
OsmAnd & used to navigate us on a walk round the wilds of the Peak
District. I've done the same to get us through Europe in the Summer.
Fantastic bit of software.

*2) Select "option 2" which you will see the storage location
is /storage/extSdCard/Android/data/net.osmand/files*

I wished this worked Matt but the option I get for #2 is
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/net.osmand/files

So still no luck. I tried restarting the tablet a few times, maybe I should
try deleting/installing the program again but I'll loose my favorites
unfortunately.
