dear friends I'm happy using osmand in my missions.
I'm working for United Nations and now I'll be in Africa with the Ebola mission. I'm trying to download the Ghana map and that country is not in the download list. How can I get the map?

Thank for the support and help. I really think that osm is a great project and osmand is a dream come true :Do

There is indeed no Ghana map at this moment.
I just created a polygon for it and asked for a pull-request to have it
added to the repository and another pull request to have it added to the
maps to be generated.

I have no idea if and when they are added. And if they are added when the
map will be generated.

best,
Harry

I don't know if this touches the core of open source, or if is just the result of a bunch of enthusiasts. Perhaps its just lucky timing. But it does choke me up a bit.

A lot of the maps in OSM are created on a "most used" or "most requested"
basis. A lot of the Osmand maps are based on base osm.pbf map data files
(Google protobuf format) from download.geofabrik.de. Geofabrik hardly has
African countries and not so much Far/Near/East Azia countries either).
Geofabrik itself is a commercial company creating all kind of maps and map
products based on OSM. To be able to make profit, or even to be able to
survive, they have to focus on "profitable" regions. At the same time they
generously support the OSM project by generating these osm.pbf basemaps
every night for download by others (and they also generate osm.bz2 files
and zipped shapefiles).

And yes: The volunteers fill in the gaps. Within the OsmAnd project a very
small group creates maps for missing countries based on the continent data
(like Africa, but also Far/Near/East Azia) via polygons. (1)
And again yes: This is done on a "I need a map for country <country_xyz>"
basis.

(1): See also my two wiki articles
https://code.google.com/p/osmand/wiki/CreateOfflineMapsForYourself and
https://code.google.com/p/osmand/wiki/CreatePolygonforCountryMapGeneration.
I use the second to create new maps like the one for Ghana for example.

Maybe, but that's open source. Buy TomTom maps or Navigon maps for example
and they cost a lot of money. With Osmand you get all kind of maps for free.
Tomtom and Navigon maps, or commerical maps in general, are indeed more
complete with better POI coverage and better housenumber coverage, but OSM
maps from Osmand, but also MapFactor Navigator Free (MNF), are updated a
lot more often than those commerical maps.
I do have an old Tomtom and an old Navigon. New roads or roundabouts are
sometimes available within 24 hours in OSM and within 1-2 weeks in OsmAnd
or MNF. That takes sometimes more then 6 months for tomtom and Navigon.

So there are pros & cons. I don't want to say more about this because I
don't want to start a flame.

Dear friends
Regards from Freetown.
I been using the app and the work is fantastic. I know that HOT coordinated
the mapping for this countries. I'm also promoting it's use with the Ebola
mission and national staff.

There are a couple of websites where I can share some article about OSM and
osmand (perhaps galileo for ios also?)

Do you have some shareable document?

Finally I must say that osmand is working fantastically here. And all the
ebola responders who I talked agree with that.

Do you have some "osmand for dummies " that I can share with them?

Again thanks a lot for all your support and help.

Saludos

Hi Luis,

There is not really a shareable document.
Joost Schouppe did some nice "hands on" article on his blog:
https://joostschouppe.wordpress.com/2014/07/25/using-osmand-on-the-road/
And there are of course the wiki articles at:
https://code.google.com/p/osmand/wiki/Welcome?tm=6

And finally, but I'm sure you know that one, is the Osmand site itself for
some overview information: http://osmand.net/

Harry, any idea how such a big and long standing country could be missing
from the list? It is not like it was established in 2014.
Isn't downloading whole of Africa too big and an unecessary load on the
server and also on the phone?
