Discussion:
Online Nominatim search?

I am running Osmand version 2.1.1 and needed to look up a house number that
was not in OpenStreetMap and thus not in the Osmand map data. On the
OpenStreetMap website I can do that as Nominatim falls back on some other
data sources if it needs too.

I was pretty sure that in earlier versions of Osmand there was an option to
do an address search "online" using Nominatim. But I can't find it now.

Am I mistaken that it used to exist?

If it did exist, has it been removed?

If it is still in Osmand, how does one use it?

Turn on the online maps plugin and it becomes available as a button in the
POI search.

This gets asked repeatedly, like I said last time I replied to the
question, having the online features controlled in one place is a good
thing, but there is apparently a problem with the name/UI/discoverability.

I don’t think I’d have ever found that without your response. And I did look through all the documents and FAQs at osmand.net . . .

I urgently vote for making the nominatim online search feature *NOT
dependent* on the online maps plugin, but make it *available always*.

What is the benefit from having that feature hidden in the online map
plugin ???

When enough time, will try to open a github issue for that.

I fully agree with Stephan. To some extend I understand the decisions to
gather all on-line actions under online maps plugin setting, but I don't
need online maps to be able to use nominatim search.
Uploading POIs/OSM data from OsmAnd does not belong to the online maps
plugin either.

I would also strongly suggest to decouple it from the online maps plugin
and make it a separate warning. When using nominatim a popup should occur
saying something like "Warning: The nominatim search is an online search
option. It will require a wi-fi or data connection to be able to use it".
And below the warning a checkbox "Don't warn me again".

It could also work the other way round: Just let it function and give a
warning when no internet connection, wifi or data, is available. The
nominatim search is data wise extremely small (<100 KB), so not a problem
for a data subscription either.

+1 ... please decouple it

I ever wanted to send a bug request that the nominatim search was gone with
my update to 2.x - I did not notice that this highly wanted feature was
bundled to Online Maps - which I really do not want to use and from this I
had not switched on the plugin ... :-)
